The table has always been a classroom.
House Rules is a luxury platform for learning and practicing American Mahjongg — designed for the player who takes the game seriously, and wants to take themselves seriously in it.
Our Belief
Mahjongg is not a casual game. It never was.
It is a game of memory, inference, discipline, and nerve. It rewards patience and punishes hubris. At its highest level, it requires the kind of strategic thinking that belongs in the same conversation as chess or bridge.
Yet for decades, the tools to actually learn it have been scattered, dated, or designed without regard for the people sitting at the table.

House Rules Launches
After much research, design, and play-testing, we've launched something we're genuinely proud of. We hope it does the game justice — and earns a place at your table.
Philosophy
We have exactly six house rules.
Rule No. 01
Play often. The table remembers.
Consistency beats intensity. A player who sits down every day for fifteen minutes will outgrow one who plays for four hours once a month.
Rule No. 02
Know why. Not just what.
Memorizing hands will get you started. Understanding the logic behind each discard is what makes you dangerous at the table.
Rule No. 03
Lose gracefully. Learn quickly.
Every wall teaches something. The House coach never punishes a mistake — it illuminates it. The best players we know are the most comfortable with being wrong.
Rule No. 04
Defense is an art form.
Beginners think about what they need. Experienced players think about what others need. The shift in perspective is where the game truly begins.
Rule No. 05
The Charleston sets the tone.
How you pass reveals as much as how you play. The opening exchange is not a formality — it is the first strategic conversation of every hand.
Rule No. 06
Always sit down with intention.
The game will teach you everything it has to offer, but only if you arrive willing to be taught. Presence, patience, and a quiet mind are the prerequisites.
What Makes Us Different
A coach that teaches by explaining every move.
Contextual hints, not answers
Ask for a hint mid-hand and the House coach names the tile to play, the hand you’re building toward, and how risky the throw is — so you can make the same read yourself next time. During the Charleston it tells you which three tiles to pass.
Session review that actually teaches
After every session, step back through your discards. Each is graded against the House coach’s best play — Optimal, Solid, or Setback — with a plain-language note on the stronger discard when there was one.
Five distinct table personalities
From a Patient Teacher who plays open and talks through your missteps, to a Tournament Player who targets, calls, and defends without mercy. Each one changes how the session feels — and how much the House coach speaks up.
Long-term progress tracking
Every session is saved on your device. Watch your win rate, decision accuracy, and optimal-discard rate move over time, with an honest read on whether you’re trending up or down.

It began at my grandmother's table.

Mahjongg found me early. When my dad had errands to run, he'd leave me at my grandmother's house — and more often than not, she'd have friends on their way over, the table already set.
The sound of the tiles colliding still brings her back to me: lipstick on the rim of a teacup, the low hum of old friends who had known each other for decades, the particular warmth of a room where the game was really just an excuse to be together.
This site is a continuation of that — my own way of keeping the tradition going. I hope it becomes part of your Mahjongg journey the way the game has always been part of mine.
